The ICU is staffed at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by a trainee doctor. These doctors work under the supervision and have direct responsibility to the consultant on call for the unit. During "normal working hours" the unit may have up to four of these doctors working to provide essential care to the patients.

The doctors will have different levels of experience in critical care, some in their initial years of training, others are very experienced and nearing a consultant appointment. All trainees are fully qualified doctors who are working in the ICU to gain extra experience in the specialist field of critical care.

The doctors are there to help manage the patients and also to provide support and information for relatives and carers. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have but please remember that they are often very busy looking after critically ill patients both in the ICU and within the hospital.
